Will I fight for my country

I'm a newborn baby, born into a world unknown....
Am I black or white?
Is my family rich or poor?
Do I have a mother and father?
Do I live in a nice home?

I will know nothing until many years later.
About slavery, the Holocaust,
the wars that were fought for our freedom.
I did not ask to be born.  Was I planned?

Will I join the service and fight for my country?
Will there be no more wars?
.

Seagulls are annoying

You think we’re annoying
We’re flying around
Looking for food
That fell on the ground

The clams you’re eating
They're ours to eat
So we think it's fair
That we take your treat

When seeing your food
And not to miss out
Our friends will arrive
You’ll scream and shout

No popcorn or peanuts
We’ll have to survive
During long winter months
Until you arrive

Whale watching

From our sightseeing boat
We saw Silla the whale
And everyone cheered
When we saw her tail

An older whale
Almost 40 years old
Silla’s 14th baby
Is with her we’re told

Swimming together
For only a year
When baby matures
It will disappear

A whale is a mammal
Though it lives in the sea
It needs to breathe
Just like you and me

Don't get close to the whales
If you're in a small boat
Whales can tip you over
Then you'll have to float

Lobster Tales

How did you find me
I’m crawling around
Beneath the sea
Hard to be found

I washed ashore
After a storm
That’s where you saw me
It isn’t the norm

You thought I looked tasty
You needed to eat
Although I looked scary
I would be a treat

With cages to trap us
It’s now a delight
To cook us and eat us
With family at night

And many years later
A delicacy
As precious as gold
When were’ not in the sea

September 11th Memorial

The Towers are gone
But we’ll never forget
The lives that were lost
We’ll always regret

Where the Towers had been
Now fountains appear
And the first responders
Performed without fear

A tribute to all
Those victims who died
Along the fountains
Their names are inscribed

The Freedom Tower
Rose -up in its place
But the Twin Towers
It will never replace

Lotto tickets

I’m sitting in McDonald's
With my coffee while debating
Should I buy a lotto ticket
What a problem I’ve created

It will cost me five dollars
To scratch the card and see
I had won fifty dollars
So now they've hooked me

Five dollars isn’t much
Though it is if you are poor
But the people on the corner
Wanting money, I’ll ignore

Talking to strangers

I met you in a store
While standing in a line
Complaining about the wait
The checkers were behind

I met you eating lunch
Where we each sat alone
We had a conversation
And then we both went home

I met you in a ladies room
We had to wait in line
We talked a little while
The wait took too much time

We sat with one another
While traveling on a plane
A conversation started
Yet I never knew your name

I told you about my life
Like you were my best friend
Knowing when we landed
Our encounter soon would end

We sat at the same table
While we were on a cruise
And told each other everything
Because we liked to schmooze

I’m sure we’ll never meet
After the cruise ends
We’ll just pack up and leave
An email we may send

Although I’ve talked to strangers
Who don’t become my friends
It helps to pass the time, and
Maybe I’ll see them again

Your Twin

Today I saw a fella
Who could have been your twin
I almost got confused
The moment he walked in

But then I saw up close
He had a little beard
I knew it wasn’t you
A beard would look too weird

Nobody can replace you
No matter how they try
And if they look like you
They’d be a lucky guy

Moving van

Today I saw a moving van
Driving down the road
And wondered where it’s going
Carrying a heavy load

A family that was moving
To another place
A brand-new adjustment
A challenge to face

New friends and new school
New places to see
Will it be far away
Or near family

Will they live where it’s hot
Or where it gets cold
And will they stay there
Until they are old

The van only goes
A few miles away
In the same neighborhood
This family will stay

I was inspired to write this poem
because the house on the corner
of my cul-de-sac was sold twice
within the last few years and each
owner moved to different homes
in my neighborhood.

Where will you sleep tonight

Where will you rest your head
Where will you sleep tonight
All alone in your big home
Somehow it doesn’t seem right

Where will you sleep tonight
Where will your rest your head
An apartment in the projects
Many children share your bed

Where will you rest your head
Where will you sleep tonight
In a shelter with many people
Hoping you won’t get in a fight

Where will you sleep tonight
Where will you rest your head
On a path heading to the border
From a country you just fled
