On September 12, 2008, Hurricane Ike struck the coast of Galveston
before travelling North to Houston.
I’m in the dark
Though it’s mid-day
The lights are out
The sky is gray
A hurricane
Had come our way
Along the coast
No one could stay
Those further away
Confronted Ike
Waiting for him
To take a hike
A storm that lasted
Through the night
His mighty winds
Caused quite a fright
Trees uprooted
From the ground
Covering lawns
Many were found
For countless years
These trees would sway
Till hurricane winds
Blew them away
Food that spoiled
I threw in the trash
We’re eating out often
And using up cash
Without any power
My house stays hot
And rinsing out clothes
I’m doing a lot
Plenty of candles
Are needed at night
When taking a shower
I use a flashlight
Along the right grid
The power’s restored
The rest of us
Are feeling ignored
I’m doing my best
Without having power
I’ve even extended
My happy hour
Hurricane Ike
You haven’t won
The clean-up work
Is now getting done

NOTE: Alan and I were without power for 16 days and we'd like to thank
everyone who offered help.

Memorial Day
Our military heroes
We celebrate today
For fighting in a war
They did not run away
They’ll travel very far
They have to keep the peace
The fighting still continues
And never seems to cease
These military heroes
Are people who will serve
In all of the armed forces
Our safety they’ll preserve
We'll always have an enemy
Who hates the U.S.A.
Since we believe in freedom
They want us done away
This day we must remember
The ones who’ve fought in wars
Plus the ones still fighting
Far from U.S. shores

The Bachelor
Finding a mate
There’s many to date
Millions of people
Anxiously wait
Dressed in bikinis
The ladies look hot
All are ready
To tie the knot
Unable to hide
The cameras are there
Intimate moments
They’re forced to share
Plenty of cat fights
Causing a feud
Some of these ladies
Really act rude
The first kiss is brief
The next ones are long
They don’t seem to mind
We’re tagging along
Many hard feelings
We'll see on this show
Without their roses
The girls are let go
Two ladies remaining
Will already know
The one that he's chosen
When they air the show
A whirlwind romance
With a few private dates
This new TV couple
Became soul mates

Gun Control
Those who have guns
Are in control
Causing you fear
That is their role
They are in charge
When holding a gun
Do what you’re told
Don't try to outrun
Though we may listen
And do what they say
There’s no guarantee
We’ll be living that day
Those who cause harm
Think they are brave
Watching their victims
Trying to behave
There was a time
During World War II
The Jews in Europe
Were told what to do
The Jews obeyed
Germans with guns
Those who escaped
Were the lucky ones
Few fought back
But most didn’t try
Obeying oppressors
So they wouldn't die
It’s easy to say
What someone should do
When there is no gun
Pointed at you
Those who have guns
Who just want to hunt
Make sure there’s no one
Standing in front

Surprise me
What kind of day will it be
When I awaken tomorrow
Will the sun be shining bright
There won't be a cloud in sight
And a new day without sorrow
Surprise me
Surprise me everyday
Will each day be unique
In advance I’d like to peek
Will it matter if I pray
What kind of day will it be
I won’t know in advance
Will I work and cook and clean
Will somebody act real mean
Will I get another chance
Surprise me
Surprise me everyday
Let each day be really great
Filled with love and never hate
Will a loved one go away
What kind of day will it be
Maybe something unexpected
A visit from a long lost friend
A helping hand someone will lend
Or will I be neglected
Surprise me
Surprise me everyday
Let each day be unique
Happiness I try to seek
Hopeful things will go my way

Shopping
I like to shop a lot for clothes
To wear the current styles
The major stores are all nearby
I do not drive for miles
I try hard not to stop and stare
At those who wear odd clothes
And I think models look bizarre
On runway fashion shows
I like to shop at discount stores
Ross is my favorite one
As soon as I go in the store
My search has just begun
At Wal-Mart I will also shop
Though people that I know
Say all their items they import
So this store they won't go
The Dollar stores I really like
Their prices can’t be beat
A dollar for a greeting card
It’s really quite a treat
Garage sales are a great pastime
I just might spot a treasure
It doesn't matter what it's worth
A bargain gives me pleasure
My house is really cluttered now
With all my neighbors’ stuff
I can't give up garage sales
Although I've bought enough
I'm cutting back on buying clothes
And when I have too many
I’ll donate them to charity
For those with hardly any
One final thing I have to say
To every discount store
Please try and stay in business
Keep building more and more

Squeezable contiments
Squeezable condiments
What a delight
Ketchup on fries
Is no longer a fight
Placed in a bottle
We certainly know
Tap tap the end
It helps ketchup go
In plastic containers
They found the trick
Ketchup moves faster
Yet it’s still thick
In these containers
Mayonnaise will squeeze
Dispensing its contents
With so much ease
Mustard and relish
You also can squeeze
They’re tasty on hot dogs
And burgers with cheese
Forget using knives
To dip and spread
Tilt and squeeze
To put on your bread

Dress for success
Dress for success
That’s what they say
Wear a nice outfit
For work and play
Discount stores
Are places to shop
Department store prices
Will always drop
Looks are deceiving
No one can tell
When you’re looking good
But not doing well
Dress for success
Let others think
That you have money
And a coat that’s mink
