Ideas to build ships
Ideas to build boats
Ideas to build castles
Surrounded by moats
Ideas to build tunnels
Ideas to build bridges
Ideas to build roads
Along mountain ridges
Ideas to build cars
Ideas to build planes
Ideas to build trucks
And underground trains
Ideas that were big
Ideas that were bright
Ideas that were great
Ideas that were right

Million Dollar Pier
When summers began
And the nights were clear
On Sunday we’d go
To the Million Dollar Pier
The pier extended
Far out at sea
It’s where dad took
My brother and me
A place to have fun
On a hot summer night
The lights on the pier
Were always bright
Alongside the pier
You could win a prize
I once won a doll
That had blue eyes
I’d wear a nice dress
With a white crinoline
On the little boat ride
Dad helped me in
Holding the reins
Of a beautiful horse
The music would play
As we stayed on course
The kiddie rides
Were always a thrill
Although one ride
Once gave me a chill
A haunted house
That I wanted to see
Witches and ghosts
Really scared me
While in this house
I screamed and cried
Afraid that I'd
Be trapped inside
When I got older
I went without dad
A wonderful time
My friends and I had
The haunted house
Wasn’t as scary
Yet still I was
A little wary
The roller coaster
Seemed very tall
But from a great height
It didn’t fall
Sitting in tea cups
That spun us around
The Ferris wheel circled
Around and around
Rides didn’t drop
A hundred feet
Or turn you over
While in your seat
Childhood memories
Will always be dear
Of summers spent
On the Million Dollar Pier

You're all alone
Sipping your coffee
Each morning alone
You try not to gripe
You try not to groan
A younger woman
Wanted your spouse
He asked you to leave
His great big house
A lengthy marriage
He chose to undo
Because a new love
He had to pursue
Several weeks later
The news arrived
His car had crashed
He hadn’t survived
All of his money
And property too
His will still claimed
Belonged to you
Sipping your cocktail
While stunned you are
This turn of events
Was really bizarre

Trucks for men and boys
Cars and trucks
Were favorite toys
But never dolls
For little boys
Trucks were smaller
Than the boys
But they’d control
Their little toys
Bending over
On all fours
Pushing trucks
Along the floors
Never further
From their yard
Tonka trucks
Were driven hard
Eighteen wheelers
On the road
Men will drive
Their heavy load
All those trucks
Are long and tall
Unlike trucks
When they were small
No more pushing
With one hand
Engines follow
Their command
Driving down
The interstate
Lacking sleep
So they’re not late
Little trucks
So boys can play
Big trucks keeep
The men away

Old hotel
The old hotel
That stands alone
Is right outside
The business zone
Twenty-five stories
A city block wide
If not the right color
Your stay was denied
Three meals a day
A guest could eat
And there were friends
They’d always meet
During the summer
They'd swim in the pool
On hot summer nights
Their rooms were cool
Cocktail lounges
With music to dance
Where many would find
A new romance
As years went by
The building decayed
Exotic places
Is where people stayed
Costly repairs
Wouldn't be made
The wrecker’s ball
Will soon invade
An empty lot
Where weeds will grow
And lost memories
Of days long ago

Cousin Kenny
I never left New Jersey
Until the day I flew
All the way to Vietnam
A place I never knew
Rice fields were abundant
They often posed a threat
Viet Cong would hide there
This war I didn’t get
The Viet Cong would infiltrate
The South is where they’d go
We had to shoot at everyone
Cause how were we to know
The drugs were very plentiful
They helped you to forget
We couldn’t face another day
Without the high we’d get
I did one tour in Vietnam
For me that was enough
Because of all the friends I lost
I was no longer tough
I'll never go away again
New Jersey's where I'll stay
I suffer from traumatic stress
And get disabled pay

Bathroom Graffiti
Bonnie loves Johnny
Written on the wall
Love that’s professed
In a bathroom stall
Surrounded by hearts
With names inside
The person they love
They want to confide
Restroom initials
Instead of a name
So no one will know
The love they proclaim
What you see written
On bathroom stalls
Is love that remains
Within bathroom walls
