On the Boardwalk
In Atlantic City
Fifty young ladies
All looking pretty
All summer long
We'd eagerly wait
To watch the parade
And stay up late
The beautiful floats
The high school bands
Massive crowds
Filling the stands
The motorcade passed
As we gazed with delight
At the beautiful girls
On a cool starry night
Throughout the week
The girls would compete
In talent shows
Though few would repeat
A scholarship pagent
They tried to proclaim
A beauty pageant
Was the real name
The following week
On a Saturday night
Millions of people
Watched with delight
Those who performed
Showed no fear
An old beauty queen
Would soon reappear
Who would win
Who would lose
The final contestant
We'd try to choose
Changes were made
They got a new host
Bert Parks wouldn't sing
The song I liked most
For so many years
No one projected
A woman of color
Would be selected
Protests and scandals
In later years
A queen dethroned
She left in tears
When summers now end
In Atlantic City
They’ll never return
Those girls who were pretty
