You knew the dates
Of important occasions
Birthdays, anniversaries
And graduations
Reciting the words
Of prayers you knew
Knowing the names
Of the plants you grew
Walking the streets
Alone late at night
Policemen would say
You weren’t acting right
I felt it was best
Though you were upset
In this nursing home
Good care you'd get
After numerous visits
My name you forgot
I tried not to act
Too distraught
Now sitting in silence
Not knowing what day
The words you knew
You can no longer say
I remember the love
I’ve always been shown
When I was real young
And now on my own
My loving mother
I sometimes will see
By the look in your eyes
That you recognize me
