Why won't you wear glasses

Why won’t you wear glasses
They compliment your face
If contact lenses you prefer
They’re easy to misplace

Why won’t you wear glasses
You’d rather fix your eyes
Using Lasik surgery
I think that is unwise

You may need reading glasses
When reaching middle age
And if you do forget them
You can not read a page

Sarah Palin’s glasses
The VP Candidate
Good taste she has in fashion
That's what her glasses state

Why won't you wear glasses
Be thankful for your sight
It's no good to be too vain
Eyeglasses are alright

Another year and I'm still here

One day I tried to end my life
And almost did succeed
I told my spouse I overdosed
"Please help me, " I would plead

With no more purpose to my life
And nothing left to do
My life is not much better now
That's just my point of view

It wasn't meant for me to die
The paramedics cared
From that day not too long ago
When dying got me scared

From March, 2004 (after turning 50) to early 2006, severe depression caused me to no longer function. I was in and out of mental hospitals 4 times in 2 years. This poem reflects how I felt the year following my first hospitalization for attempted suicide. During this time, my husband hired companions to keep me company and help around the house and it was very expensive. He did it because he didn’t want to find me dead when he got home from work. My children were upset and disappointed in me. It took a long time until I found a great psychiatric nurse who has a lot of compassion. Poetry has saved my life. Be careful what you say to people, you never know what they’ve gone through.

Republican or Democrat

Republican or Democratic
You're given this choice
When casting your vote
This gives you a voice

Their campaign ads
Are constantly seen
Before an election
Some ads are mean

Candidates claiming
They are the best
Saying to voters
"Put me to the test"

Donkeys or elephants
Each party's mascot
On campaign posters
You'll see them a lot

No dictator rules us
We're free to choose
But the person you want
May happen to lose

You need to stand on your own two feet

You need to stand
On your own two feet
When you need help
This I’ll repeat

People might help
For just a while
They might stop by
And make you smile

Their interest in you
Will not always last
Soon you’ll feel
Just like an outcast

If you sit and sulk
And not get around
It will make it worse
It will keep you down

You need to stand
On your own two feet
This illness you have
You need to beat

Aboard the Emerald Princess

One balmy afternoon
I decided to take a stroll
Aboard the Emerald Princess
Front to aft was my goal

While on the starboard side
It never occurred to me
This picture I had taken
Was a photo opportunity

Whenever I'd go on shore
I always turned around
To see this awesome ship
The best one I have found

Our Heavenly Father

When I first learned about God
It was when I was a youth
I belived he did exist
I was sure it was the truth

God created the Universe
They said in just 6 days
On the 7th day he rested
But no one gave him praise

After God created Adam
Eve soon became his wife
And they would be together
Forever in their life

They lived in the Garden of Eden
But ate the forbidden fruit
Being warned not to eat it
God said they'd have to scoot

God is our Heavenly Father
He told us how to behave
Stating the Ten Commandments
To Moses these rules he gave

Why was God just watching
Those who've done no wrong
In chambers filled with gas
Being told they don't belong

Those who never go to church
Can still pray anywhere
In restaurants before eating
Some people recite a prayer

"Thank God" and "God Bless You"
People will often say
They'll even say, " I'll pray for you"
Concern they will convey

"One Nation Under God"
We pledge our allegiance to
But those in doubt of God
Won't agree with this point of view

Get a good night's sleep

We need to get our sleep at night
But some sleep when its day
They’ll keep their curtains closed
So out the light will stay

Some people like to sleep a lot
While others don’t need much
When I miss the morning news
I feel I’m out of touch

Animals that hibernate
It’s like their sleep vacation
But people can not hibernate
They’d suffer from starvation

Cats will want to sleep all day
And then stay out at night
We say that they’re nocturnal
And often they will fight

The naps they call siestas
In countries people rest
They take them in the afternoon
That’s when they think its best

Those who cannot sleep at night
Sleeping pills they'll take
Counting sheep just won't work
They'll still be wide awake

Don't stay out too late at night
Your sleep do not deprive
And if you're really tired
Be certain you don't drive
