I'm praying for rain

It’s awfully hot
And very dry
It will not rain
I wonder why

My lawn is brown
And barely alive
Some of my plants
Will not survive

Mosquitoes are gone
I don’t know where
I’m not getting bit
So I don’t care

An Indian Rain Dance
I must learn how
Keep praying for rain
I must do now

Immitation

Imitation butter
Many will use
Because they like it
While others refuse

Imitation sugar
In coffee and tea
For those on a diet
Or trying to be

Imitation flowers
I often will buy
You don’t have to water
And they’ll never die

Imitation Diamonds
So real they appear
Don’t get upset
If they disappear

Imitation singers
Try to look alike
Those who are famous
While they have the mic

A dangerous job

Behind a desk
Reporting the news
A job that’s safe
Many will choose

A dangerous job
Reporting the war
Among the soldiers
They can't ignore

Kidnapped reporters
Are thrown in jail
In foreign countries
They’re denied bail

Invading a country
Without a gun
Only their camera
Continues to run

In North Korea
They're forced to live
Twelve years of labor
These ladies will give

A misunderstanding
On enemy soil
Innocent people
Are forced to toil

When in harms way
Reporting the news
Who's eager to go
Will any refuse

Lisa Ling's Sister and Fellow Reporter Sentenced to 12 Years Hard Labor in North Korea
Monday, June 8, 2009 Last updated 10:30 a.m. PT

U.S. journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling, sister of former View co-host Lisa Ling, have been sentenced to 12 years in a labor prison by North Korea's Central Court.
The reporters, who were working for Current TV, a company co-founded by Al Gore, were convicted of a "grave crime they committed against the Korean nation and their illegal border crossing," the Korean Central News Agency said.
Claiming suspicion of "hostile acts," North Korean authorities detained Lee and Ling along the China-North Korea border on March 17. The two were on assignment reporting on the plight of North Korean refugees.
"We are deeply concerned by the reported sentencing of the two American citizen journalists by North Korean authorities, and we are engaged through all possible channels to secure their release," U.S. State Department spokesman Ian Kelley said in a statement. "We once again urge North Korea to grant the immediate release of the two American citizen journalists on humanitarian grounds."
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Sunday the charges were "baseless" and that the women should be allowed to return home. The sentencing comes amid rising tensions between the United States and North Korea, which detonated its second nuclear device in as many months on May 25.
Lee's and Ling's families made public pleas for the journalists' release last week before the start of the five-day trial. Lisa Ling said she hopes the women's predicament will serve as a catalyst for diplomacy between the countries.

Likes and dislikes

I don’t like the opera
Or the ballet
Or shows where you sit
So far away

I don’t like museums
There’s too much to see
That walking around
Is not for me

I mostly watch movies
At home on TV
Where no one can sit
In front of me

Shopping for bargains
I love to do
But I won’t be going
To the zoo

What's behind the curtain

The red velvet curtain
Soon will rise
The show will begin
It will be a surprise

Curtain call
The actors appear
After the show
The people will cheer

Window curtains
Keep out the light
And conceal you
When it’s night

A gown from curtains
Scarlett once wore
In Gone with the Wind
When she was poor

The iron curtain
No one could see
Was once a threat
To our country

Behind the curtain
A choice to make
Or keep the prize
That’s yours to take

The Count

Count the money
You have earned
Count the lessons
You have learned

Count the years
Since you were born
Count the times
You’ve been forlorn

Count the cookies
In the jar
Count the times
You’ve driven far

Count the times
You were unsure
Count the times
You’ve helped the poor

Count the weeks
We’ve had no rain
Count the times
You’ve been in pain

Count the days
Till you’re released
Count your family
That’s deceased

If you’ve ever
You’ve fought with fiends
Count the times
You’ve made amends

The Last Banana

I’m a Chiquita Banana
The last one of the bunch
Hoping I’ll be eaten
Perhaps when you have lunch

When I was very green
You put me on a plate
To ripen with the others
Of the bunch you already ate

I went from green to yellow
That is, at the very same time
The others right beside me
Were eaten in their prime

Because I now have age spots
My final days are few
So put me in your cereal
I'll add flavor as you chew

I hope that you are thinking
Of something you can make
Mix me with some other fruit
Or make a banana cake

The longer that I sit here
My skin will get too brown
My insides will get mushy
I soon won’t be around

You shouldn't buy bananas
While I’m still sitting here
Worried I’ll be discarded
So now I live in fear
